Event Description

In 1994, two businessmen met for lunch at the suggestion of their pastor. It became clear to both of them that they shared a common approach to living out their faith in God.

Months earlier, Bob Buford had authored the book Half Time, describing a process which has been coined as “moving from success to significance.” One of the men offered it as a gift to the other. Instead of accepting the book, the friend not only confirmed the value and impact of the book in his own life but revealed that he had already bought 100 of them and sent them across the country to every friend he could think of.

This common belief in Buford’s concept of moving from success to significance spurred their efforts to have Buford to speak to a group of Christians in their community. A group of 60 people gathered at a local Christian conference center for a six hour lecture and interactive conference to learn and share ideas about this concept. The response and participant dialog was overwhelming. Following this initial gathering, the decision was made to establish a planning committee to host on an annual basis a one day conference where the interaction and collective thinking of these Christians could occur. The conference has been held for 12 years and the group has been growing since the inception of the conference.

What started as a lunch meeting between two acquaintances ended with the inception of the Time Out Conference, which now encourages over 650 people in peer relationships throughout the year.
